We have over 400 private water supplies in the Moorlands and they have
installed numerous types of water treatment. Not all Ion exchange systems
rely
on salt, some are sealed units (the size of large acetylene bottles) and
last
about 5 years, some use doulton 'candle' type ceramic filters which remove
some
minerals. There are the electromagnetic sacrificial type (that attach
around
the outside of the pipe). Some use point of delivery systems (like the
separate
sink tap - which are like large britta filters), all have pros and cons,
one
thing that they all have in common is expense. The downside of all of these
systems is that they remove any residual chlorine from your drinking water
and
this is what prevents bacteria breeding - most of the systems that are
installed on private supplies have an inline UV filter at the point of
delivery
to guarantee sterilisation. If you use a whole hose softener, once more you
are
probably removing your residual chlorine (disinfectant), if you then have
loft
storage of this water, you may be encouraging bacterial growth. Check this
out
with your supplier before you install.
