Indeed it might... but I'd like to actually find someone doing this to get
a
comparison on cost.

In most of mainland Europe, basement/underground structures are still
commonly built, and local builders will have knowledge of how to build a
new
house with a basement. Here in the UK, the average builder raises his
"don't
do that" defence, and quotes a ludicrous price... not because it's
expensive, but because it's unknown.

Maybe the solution is to get a French builder in?

As for "expensive" - it's all relative. It would cost about £250k
for me to
move to a "local" house with another reception room. This is
because my
house is about the biggest "estate" house around here, and that
the only
things bigger are "rural / village", which command a huge premium
for
like-for-like sizing.
