I suppose I should admit to a parallel project here - I used to make
a 16 channel dimmer system, but no longer, due to CE certification
costs for small volume.

Well, this thing had as its control element a 2 PIC architecture,
one of which was a controller, with digital I/O and DMX512 for 16
channels. This was then fed an Artistic Licence pre-programmed PIC,
which did the actual phase shift gubbins driving solid state relays.

The contol element is fairly useful, from memory; 16 channels, 99
scenes, 8 (or 16) buttons, if 8 buttons then 8 digital outs (though
I'm not sure the software supported this?), DMX512 output, RS232
control using the Centralite protocol. Dim times variable up to 27
minutes or something like that.

I dont want to make the software freely available as its a
commercial product still in use, but if anyone wants to have a play
you can have it... There is a full hardware design with PCB (no
patches!) Code is in C for CCS compiler.
