providing the frequency of the beep isnt too high (1KHz ish, I
guess), then most small processors will be fast enough to do a
pseudo-DSP tone detection, either doing software PLL, or maybe doing
a filter and detector.  Rough and ready is all that is required here.

Or do it for real in DSP, get a DSP starter kit which has all the
hardware for audio capture on board.

All to clever for me by half, though!

Interestingly, BSR for X10 got a patent on doing software detection
of the 120KHz carrier...
