Ata push you can use the parallel port in the back of the laptop - it isn't
pretty and it takes a while, but I have done it and can loan you the
requisite cable if reqd.

And if the image will fit on a dvd or a cdrom, and the laptops got one as
well, then you dont have to fiddle with the network settings for getting
the
image on the new drive, just boot to a floppy with cd /dvd drivers, pop the
image on a cdr or dvd r and ghost the machine from the drive.  Upshot of
that is that you also get a working backup of the state of your laptop as
well.
