What type of router is it?  I've just setup a VPN via a linksys router,
and that turned out to be a bit of a nightmare.  I had to *downgrade*
the firmware of the router to get it to work.

It's got something to do with VPN using protocol GRE over port 1723.
Not all routers support GRE.  If I remember correctly seeing the
authentication message, but the user not actually being authenticated is
a pretty good sign that the GRE protocol is not being passed though.
