Sorry for the off topic post but I am in need of a PC auditing tool that as
a minimum will report hardware specs (memory, processor etc) and if
possible
some info about applications installed (although this is secondary).

key requirements are....

-free or very cheap
-fit on a floppy and record output to floppy or alternatively to screen for
printing
-not overcomplicated as this is for a quick and dirty audit of a building
full of PCs
-simple to use as clerical staff with little knowledge will be running it
