Wus. real men bid with just 4 seconds to go ;-) (then you have the added
anxiety of waiting for Auction Sniper to work out whether it's actually
placed the bid or not (it always reports 'not' at first!).
Sniping is not endemic on most eBay auctions just yet, but when it is, eBay
will just be a cheap advertising system (which is it already for things
such
as cars). I feel some guilt for being one of those that's using Snipe s/w,
but equally, on the type of good I normally bid for (tech stuff), so are a
bunch of other people. If eBay universally blocked Snipes I'd be happy,
but
as long as some people can use it, then I have to to stay in the game, as
the latency for bidding manually is just way too variable.

It is a useful technique, though. I used it to secure a couple of PDAs -
the program placed a bid with only 10 seconds to go, meaning no-one had
time
to outbid me.
