mark will try it out - really stupid of me not to try that,
I thought because it comes up in a popup to ask for a user /pass it would
not work.

You can embed a username and password into a URL. The syntax is:
http://<USERNAME>:<PASSWORD>@<SERVER>/<PATH>
So something like:
http://admin:mypassword@192.168.1.1/doc/online.sht
.... may give you what you want
- this gives the online status page for a Vigor 2600 with IP address
192.168.1.1, username "admin", and password
"mypassword".
