For most auctions a snipe tool is not necessary, but you will notice lots
of
auctions that you just miss by a few pence at the last minute!

I think the issue on this original thread was the possibility of the seller
having another eBay ID and bidding themselves to raise the price.  Check
through that they haven't done this before, and report it to eBay if you
suspect.

I used this software on the last item I won although it never actually
needed to place a bid as I won it anyway.

A question though :-
Doesn't using Ebay's bid up to a price feature have the same result? It may
even be better not needing to get around the Internet latency.

It may have been people using sniping software - automatically placing bids
at the last minute to avoid people then coming in and outbidding them.  If
you get a few people doing this, the price can jump quite dramatically at
the end.

It is a useful technique, though.  I used it to secure a couple of PDAs -
the program placed a bid with only 10 seconds to go, meaning no-one had
time
to outbid me.
