Not very well is the short answer! I'm on my 3rd, but they're never as
reliable as they should be.
I did take apart one of the old style ones (which were a lot smaller);
basically I think they work using passive responder technology, the same
kind of systems used for proximity tags that some buildings have for their
staff to gain access to secure areas. I installed a 'PAC token' access
system at my last place, but their range was only a couple of foot (at
best). No battery involved, I think by bombarding the tag with um...waves
of some sort (microwaves?), that generates enough energy for the tag to
identify itself to the sensor.
Of course, I could be completely wrong.

Having got bored of throwing money into a rubbish bin, I've now acquired a
DART tag for the beloved M25 crossing at Dartford. Now when they said
"tag",
I imagined something quite small and neat, but a box the size of a packet
of
fags :)
I'm curious, how exactly does it work? Is there a battery in the tag
itself?
Alex (trying to resist taking it apart!)
