[OT] Dart tag, how does it work..

Having got bored of throwing money into a rubbish bin, I've now acquired a
DART tag for the beloved M25 crossing at Dartford. Now when they said
"tag", I imagined something quite small and neat, but a box the
size of a packet of fags :)

I'm curious, how exactly does it work? Is there a battery in the tag
itself?

Alex (trying to resist taking it apart!)
