I think you're getting a bit confused.The address never "becomes"
0.0.0.1, it's always 192.68.16.1. The network mask is used to determine
if an address is on the same [sub-]network. If your address is, say,
192.68.16.5 and you want 192.68.16.8, applying the mask to both
addresses yields 192.168.16.0 in both cases (ie it's on the same
network). If it's not on the same network, communication will go via the
default gateway.
