Old PC PSU as power supply for VFD

I have an old PSU salvaged from a PC, and at least one of the wires is +5v
when the PSU is plugged in, even though it isn't "switched on".

Is it safe to use this as a PSU for a Noritake VFD? I've plugged it in and
done a self test on the VFD (http://cgi.sgrimshaw.plus.com/gallery/view_photo.php?set_albumName=HA&id=dsc01567_sm)
which works OK, but what about long term?

Cheers, Stu.
