The centre needs to be immediately above or below the screen. In an
ideal world this would dictate the height of the left and right speakers
as they would be the same as the centre. In practice the height of the
screen may mean that speakers sit to the side rather than level with the
top or bottom of the screen. The surrounds should be higher up, 2' above
listening level at the very least but usually higher. These should
provide an ambient and diffused sound which is augmented by distance and
height from the listener. Ultimately you're trying to recreate what
happens in a (decent) cinema where, if you sit centrally, the surround
speakers will run up both sides of the auditorium, starting forward of
the listening position and running to behind you. The net effect is that
sound is coming at you from so many different places that you cannot
pinpoint precisely where it's coming from ie it'e literally envelops you
as a surround sound.

I'm about to start on the last major room in the house - the one that's
having the main TV etc, and want to get all the wires in place before
decorating!

So I was wondering where everyone puts their surround-sound speakers?

I don't fancy the floor standing ones (I sure they would keep getting
knocked over), so they would be mounted on the wall somewhere.  If I put
them on the picture rail, I could easily hide the wiring, but is that
too high?  Could I get away with it at least for the rears?  Low down
could be obscured by furniture, so what do you all do?
