Assuming you have broadband, you can use the Messenger 6 games - a bit
of a long road going from two PC out to Microsoft's servers to play a
game, but I've done it many a time... :-)

Games that they have at the moment:-

Checkers
Solitaire showdown
Bejeweled (not strictly multi player - more a single player competing
for high score against who you're playing with, but addictive as hell)
Minesweeper Flags (multi player version of the windows classic Minesweeper)
And if you're really pushed, Tic-Tac-Toe

:-)

I'm sure they had backgammon on there a couple of months ago, but
doesn't seem to be there just now.

Most of the other lan games I've used are probably a bit overly
violent.... depends where you draw the line with Worms (think Worms
World Party is the most recent one, I picked it up for a fiver in Game)
though, could be worth a look at one of the series..... ok you have to
blow each other up, but when you throw exploding sheep, ming vases,
banana bombs etc, it's a bit more of a giggle
