I don't recall seeing these mentioned here before so I'll post this
message. I recently posted something similar to the Selfbuild list so
apologies to those that will see it twice.

I have found a manufacturer of 1W & 5W LED fittings. These draw around
0.7 amps but claim to be the brightest LEDs in the world. The basic LED
assemblies are available through Farnell (www.farnell.co.uk, lookup
"lumileds" or "luxeon") but there's a spin-off company
that deals with the application side, their site is: www.lumidrives.com.
I particularly like the HaloLED LED Lamp and the HaloLED RGB version. These
fittings appear to have been used in the Nestle kiddies feature at the
Bluewater shopping centre in Kent. Very bright.

Big benefit is that the "Halo" products are a similar size to
conventional LV lamp, but very shallow. I presume that you could use a
conventional fitting but an LED "bulb" instead.

Nik, maybe these solve your low clearance problems in you ceilings.
