Rowdy,

A VFD can easily be read at 10ft.  There's alot of people on this group
with
SliMP3s - they use a VFD and are easily read from 20ft away.  However, if
you get a VFD and it's displaying continuously then you should expect a
useful life of a few years - its brightness fades over time.  To extend its
life how about how about dimming the display when the room is unoccupied?
