Another option is to use multiple DECT basestations linked to a PABX
especially if you have range issues. Best to beg borrow or steal a decent
set to test in _your_ house as Callum suggested.

Anyone know of a DECT set that can be configured to automatically give you
an external line when you go off-hook? Otherwise it would probably get
confusing :)
