WLAN puzzles

I'm trying to set up a small WLAN to network 3 PCs all running W98.  Put
wireless cards in each, set up all on same channel and in ad hoc mode,
etc, done all the usual Windows networky things , they should see/talk
to each other, no?  Well, seeing is kinda sporadic, and when they do
find each other, Windows can see the machine but not the disc contents.
Distance is not an issue they don't work whether the machines are next
to each other or at the other end of the house.  Is it just the cheap PC
cards I'm using (Planet) or will this setup only work if I connect one
of the machines to an access point?  Or am I just being fick?
