Hi Stuart,

Wellcome to the group.

To start playing with X10, I think that an Active Home starting kit is the
best choice.
It contains a PC interface (CM11/12), a lamp module with dimmer (LM12- max.
300W), an appliance module (AM12-max.2000W) and a piece of software (this
is
crap, but there are many other available, depend on your specific
requests).
You can try www.laser.com in UK for X10 stuff.

Just post your questions here and for sure you will receive a lot of
answers
to choose from.
