VFD and EL do suffer from burn-in and reduced brightness.
Some controllers have a brightness level, you can extend life by running at
less than max.
In our products we blank display after 5 minutes of inactivity, but with a
security display this would not be so easy. Animating the text would reduce
burn-in.
5 year old panels are noticeably dimmer, but they still work so I wouldn't
worry too much.
This is the trade-off, but they are much more readable than lcd.
