I use LW10s, and find them OK.

If you're not going to rewire, then LWs are the least obtrusive. The
only other option would be the "inline bayonet coupling socket-
rocket" thing, but that breaks the "switch on the wall
works"
metaphor.

There are other, non-X10 options, such as the Lutron kit, but it's a
lot more expensive, and hard (read, expensive, proprietary) to
integrate into an X-10 network.
