I recently made the Elektor serial port 1-wire bus interface (April
2002) and had a few problems with the small SMD parts. What made the
difference was gluing the chip down first, a needle point iron and
very fine solder (not the welding rod stuff most places sell).

By checking the circuit, you may find only a few pins need to be
soldered, reducing the chances of a short circuit.
