I've not seen these odd plugs you describe.

The standad RJ connectors are fiddly, but well short of impossible to
make up. The trick is to unwind the wires, then sequence them and
then wind the wires round a finger to flatten them.  Once flat, trim
to length,insert into plug, and crimp.

One to demo at UKHA 2003?
