In my opinion, the best option for dimming traditional transformer
fed halogens by far is the variable voltage transformer, or variac.
This completely eliminates the annoying induced buz through hifi and
phone systems.

However, variacs are not easily automated, although motorised variacs
do exist and occaisioally surface.  And they are expensive, though
bargains are to be had from the surplus stockers.

As to triac dimmers andelectronic loads; there are now tw sorts of
dimmer, leading edge nd trailig edge, and electronic traqnsformers
fall into categories of working with one, other, both or neither type
of dimmer...
