Thanks Wayne,
Looks like the software shutdown option will be the cheapest (free!). But
need to find some software that will shutdown a server properly (running MS
ISA server).
Any ideas?
Paul.

Hiya!
Just to jump in here, if you want powerchute to run on and shutdown a 2nd
server/workstation you will need a dedicated connection to that ups.
To get this, you need an interface expander plugged into the ups (theres a
black blanking cover on the back - it goes in there). Theres two types you
can get - one with basic ports the other with smart ports.
The serial port that is built into the ups is a 'smart' port and can send
all sorts of data to the pc connected to it, the basic ports just send
'power fail, battery low' type info - still enough for powerchute to work
from.
If you need any more than 3, then you can get somthing called a ShareUps -
this plugs into your ups serial port and gives 8 ports.
Oh - just as an 'extra', the new ups's are coming out with USB ports on the
back too, this can be used instead of the smart serial port. APC dont
support using both - its either one or the other...
Take a look http://www.apcc.com/products/family/index.cfm?id=60&tab=models
Off from 'doing it in hardware', you can run batch files at various points
through the power fail events (depending on what version of powerchute) so
you could try sending remote shutdown commands in a batch file to shut down
the other pcs (wnt /w2k?) - never tried this approch myself but cant see
why
it wouldnt work.
Hope this helps.
Wayne.

Lee,
Do you have more than one PC connected to your UPS? I'm using the
PowerChute
software but can't work out how to signal to more than one server to shut
down. If I run the installer for the APC agent on the second PC, it asks
for
connection info to the UPS (which it doesn't have).
Any ideas?
Paul.
