Pete,

This is exactly the same solution I have, I use an ADSL router /
firewall to access the internet, on the router I use port forwarding and
RDP to access an internal system from the Internet, it is from here that
I access all of my other systems (Tivo etc). I find it better to only
open one port and then access everything, rather than open a port for
each service I need.

I have a Netgear WG602 for my wireless connections as well as Cat 5
cabling to most rooms for other bits and pieces (I found the Tivo did
not stream very well over wireless).

You don't need a static IP address, you can use something like
<http://www.dyndns.org/>
www.dyndns.org and a client program on one of
your systems that updates you DNS settings if your IP address changes.
That said, there are some ISP's that will include a static IP address in
your monthly subscription, e.g. <http://www.f9.co.uk/> www.f9.co.uk

Hope this helps,

Rob

P.S. To everyone, sorry for not introducing myself sooner, I have been
lurking on the list for a couple of days, I am an enthusiast that so far
has only installed IR light switches and Cat 5 cabling in my house, I am
a Software Tester working for a Networking company in the Bucks area.

Sorry to continue this question, but I just have a quick one, now that
broadband is coming may way within the next couple of months.....

Currently I just have a simple ethernet network, via an el cheapo
switch,
with 2 PCs, a Rio and TiVo hanging off it, plus the work laptop when I
'm at
home. For the laptop I'd like to set up a wireless link into the
network,
but everything else will remain ethernet connected fttb. I'd like to be
able to access the main PC and TiVo remotely, so that I can schedule
recordings and access Homeseer.

What do I need? I'm just about to place my pre-order with Eclipse, they
don't offer any wireless stuff, so I just need to build up a shopping
list.
Do I need a fixed-IP to be able to access things?

Thanks, Pete
