There are a number of scams. The most common is that the fraudsters get
you to use eBay's "Ask seller a Question" feature. The
fraudsters now
have your email address.
Then you receive a fake email with a subject line such as:
Subject: eBay acquisition of PayPal
Subject: Billing Update Requested (URGENT)
Subject: eBay and PayPal Free Listing Day 12 June
Subject: Urgent Ebay Info
etc.
This email could be hours, days or weeks later. Needless to say the
email has forged headers and actually originates from some dodgy far
eastern country. The email is in HTML and contains a link that appears
to come from eBay. The underlying HREF address however is the
fraudsters web site. This will have the look of an eBay page and will
ask you to 'log in'. It then transfers you to the real eBay. The
fraudsters now have your eBay password.
ADVICE:
If you get an email from eBay always 'validate' that it is genuine by
sending it back to spoof (at) ebay (dot) com. This is a robot that will
respond and tell if if the message is genuine, a fraud or one it cannot
understand.
Also whenever you log-in to eBay you should check the address-bar as
explained here under "Safety Tips":
