If you look at some of the cheap'n'cheerful SMS providers, eg Lycos,=20
they route your text via operators outside the UK - the favourite=20
place at the moment seems to be Singapore. This inevitably leads to=20
delays, and increasingly often lately the messages just aren't=20
getting delivered.

To give you a quick insight, the UK mobile networks have introduced a=20
compulsary termination charge per text of 3p. That means that if you=20
want to deliver a message to any UK mobile, it'll cost you 3p (plus=20
VAT). The way the cheap'n'cheerful operators get around it is send=20
via an operator that doesn't have these interconnect agreements in=20
place, and just "dump" the traffic onto the UK networks, who
deliver=20
it on a best efforts basis.

If you take 3p, add the VAT, transaction fees for accepting card=20
payments or deductions for the telephone top-up, plus the cost of the=20
infrastructure, you'll see that 6p inc VAT isn't making anyone much=20
money at all. In fact if you spend =A330 on a top-up you get your=20
credits for 5.4p inc VAT. There's hardly any margin in that!

Would you be interested in paying a fiver a month to remove the=20
adverts?

Alex
