Many moons ago whilst working on a phone line at a jewellers I accidently
snapped the wire off. The jewellers alarm panel was connected to a Telecom
RED ABC system which is continually monitored and loss of signal raises a
line break alarm.

ABC can send a number of Zoned alarms including Personal Attack, Fire etc
but both the Police and Fire authorities are supposed to respond
immediately
to a line break as it can indicate a burglar cutting the wire prior to
breaking in or a fire causing loss of phone service.

So, having broken the wire off this caused the line break and I expected
Plod to burst through the door any minute. The "minute" was
actually the
45th one, which had it been a proper robbery they would have been miles
away
by then.

They can respond quickly as I found out when I set off the alarm at a
Pharmacutical Wholesalers. I rang my control to tell them I had accidently
set it off. They picked up the dedicated "Hotline" to Police HQ
who accepted
that it was a false alarm and they wouldnt send anyone. I told my control
that the "False Alarm" message didnt seem to have got through to
the THREE
police cars that had just screamed into the car park!!!!
