does the linksys have an external antenna socket ?

if so then a better antenna would probably help.

I would locate the linksys as high up as possible, and then buy a small
switch for the office - or use multiple
cat5 links back into the office from the final location.

receive sensitivities vary quite a lot, the laptop with built-in wifi
should
have a better antenna, as that is normally
built into the lid/screen.
