Paying with PIC is fun. We have just bought 100 PIC16F648 for our custom
module use. This new chip has a 4k flash!

The range is largely dependent on transmitting power but the TM13U is not
the most efficient of receivers.

RF X-10 temperature sensors would be a good start.
