I've got the T-Vo Sky Eye (which checks for any IR transmission before
issuing a Back-Up command so as not to clash with a TiVo channel change
request).  No more red dots, no more Sky box crashes.  Best AV  ?20 spend
I've ever made.

Because one of these:

gets rid of the red-dots too (apparently - I am not using one).
