Sony DVD writer

Hi
This may be a bit OT but I seem to remember some sound advice on the
whole DVD writer issue here, not so long ago. I just bought the Sony
DRX500-UL multi standard external dvd recorder with both firewire
and USB 2 connection. Had a hard time finding one in stock!! V
pleased with the drive. So far I have copied a couple of our
company's promotional stuff -we own a lot of commercial property and
we got a company to get some footage of our better looking
buildings. Anyway the DVD discs supplied by the film company have
the video in what is called a .vob file which I seem to be unable to
open with any of my dvd and video editing software. I have a few
pakages the favourite being Sonic MyDVD to assemble video clips and
give it a menu for use on home dvd players. The disc plays fine (as
do the copies) on both PowerDVD on the pc and my home Toshiba DVD
player.
I would like to extract the video/audio from these disks (3 of them
with about 900Mb of video on each)and put them on one DVD with a
nice menu for playback on domestic DVD palyers - any ideas please?
While asking, can anyone tell me what is the difference between DVD-
R and DVD+R formats? I am using DVD-R disks now, not sure why.. I
suppose I am assuming they must be the most compatible for all
domestic players.
Thanks
Keyvan R
