Hi,

Check the date for the following files in C:\WINNT\System32config folder:

system
software
sam
default
security

If they are recent enough, then you can restore the system status at that time using recovery console.

  CHKDSK found around 10 files with errors, so hopefully my other data
  is OK. If I do a full re-install I should still have everything I
  need (all HA software settings are backed up - I think!). I also run
  Exchange 2000 server and with all the other patches, settings,
  tweaks it'll take a while to get it all back (last rebuild took 2
  days! - although there was a lot of playing). I wanted to try some
  obvious (or not so) things first before comitting to wasting a
  Sunday when I could be getting on with over HA stuff :(
