RE: Re: VPN Question

Bad form to reply to your own posts but...

Looking at Network Connections & Settings, check the LAN adapter
setting.
After installing the VPN s/w, an Eacfilt driver has been added.
Untick this & I can now print to the other PCs on the LAN while still
accessing the resources at the far end of the VPN.
Will need to do some checking to see if I have broken security protocols
here (since it allows me to do what I want, I am sure I must now be in hot
water).

LAN properties

(tick) Client for Microsoft Networks
(tick) Eacfilt Driver
(tick) File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks
(tick) Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)

untick the "Eacfilt Driver" for the LAN settings & things
worked fine!!!

Paul,

I think this option is a red herring. The option pointed to is an
option within MS VPN, which isn't what you're using... Nortel
Conntivity stuff is excellent, but interoperability is lousy, hence
running the Nortel Client on your PC rather than the MS one.

I am guessing that one of two things is happening:

1: You are using a set of IP ranges that are also in use on the far
side of the Nortel concentrator, and the VPN profile is set up as a
clash.

It would be worth running "IP Config" and "ROUTE PRINT"
both before
and after you connect the Nortel client. If you want to let me have
the results, it will be a step to diagnosing whether IP conflicts are
the problem.

If they are, don't panic - the way around this is probably to give
your home LAN IP addresses somewhere like 172.16.0.0. (This is the
third legitimate "can be used anywhere locally" set - most big
organisations use 10.0.0.0 and most small ones use 192.168.0.0)

2: If it's NOT an IP problem, it MIGHT just be a name resolution one.
Is it possible that, immediately after connecting to the VPN, you
then connect on to a Domain or an AD? If so, Domain/AD Master
Browsing might stuff your name resolution. Again, don't panic,
there's a straightforward way around this by adding static
resolutions for local devices into
$WINDIR$/system32/drivers/etc/hosts and lmhosts.

Regards,

Mark
