Hi Iwan

I'm not familiar with the company but I've read up a little on the
product as I know it's a product used by a few of the larger builders.

The 10" Commander is nothing 'that' special. Basically a residential
voice, data and video distro hub. VERY similar to the products offered
and sold by many. E.g. Clipsal's star serve and home connect ranges.
www.letsautomate.com also offer a similar type product if I remember
correctly.

As to if it's suitable to your needs, well that depends on what you want
to achieve. Certainly the commander will give you VERY little room for
expansion and its small and custom sizing will discount anything other
than Siemons own hubs etc.

If you're just wanting voice, data and video (Via CT100.) then it will
do the job well. If you've got bigger and bolder HA plans then you are
going to struggle with its custom nature and lack of scalability.

This whole topic links back to Keiran's post today about bringing HAto
the main stream market. We're still a way off that and most of the major
builders see this type of product as a complete HA solution for a new
home! (Hmmmmm.?)

The building industry is a dinosaur it takes a long time to embrace such
new technologies and when builders are making massive profits without HA
enabled homes they will be slow to embrace such USP's. Only when demand
is driven by big players or ultimately the consumer will this change.

One thing is for certain, change it will. Just give it time.

Anyway HTH and I'll get off my soapbox :-)

Many thanks

Rob Mouser

I also posted the message below to the uk.tech.home-automation
newsgroup, so apologies to those who see it twice.

We're buying a new Bellway home that had previously been reserved by
someone else, so we've no input into the fittings, etc. Anyway, it
appears the house comes equipped with a CAT5e cabling system from
smarthouseuk.co.uk, who in turn seem to import their equipment from
www.siemon.com. From what I can make out, the equipment used is
Siemon's 10 inch Command Center, but the only information I have from
Bellway is sales guff that tells me nothing about what it actually
does in its present form.
I know it is wired through to CAT5e faceplates in the study, lounge,
dining room and master bedroom, but quite how... Does anyone have any
experience of this system, in general or specifically as installed in
new Bellway homes? I'm a HA newbie, but have a bit of experience in
home computer networks (well, I've got a broadband router feeding
Internet to my wired and wireless network...), so be gentle with me!

Ta

Iwan Davies
