RE: Re: run as a service
You can automatically lock the machine by using an API call, its done
using one of the dlls in system32.. cant remember which one at the
minute (too hot)
Perhaps use an autologon, then run a script to run all your apps, then
lock the machine in this manner?

Ah, of course, I never thought of that either......
I am suffering from a cold so will use that as an excuse.....no? worth a
try...
Yes the service is running but no GUI and nothing can access HV,
actually when I tried to open HV it said the port is already open so I
suppose it is working but I do need to access the GUI sometimes.
So back to the drawing board....
What basically I am trying to do is in the event of a power failure the
server will be re-booted by the UPS but none of the programs will be
running....
If I get the system to auto logon this will sort this but I do not leave
the Admin account unlocked when I am out so will need the system to
logon to run the Start Up items then lock the server.
I could of course use a screen saver but they are a pain when you are
not using the server all the time as I mostly access it via a
workstation.
Any other options?
Thanks anyway guys, something else learnt.

Ooops, that point was obvious to me, but didn't click enough to mention
it.
You can see if a service is running by having a look in the Control
Panel /
Administrative Tool / Services, if it's setup, it'll be in there...

Erm... How do you know?
The point about SVRANY is that it runs programs as services. As such,
it doesn't help for anything that needs to present a GUI.
So, it's not useful for things like Word which are fundamentally
applications that you interact with on the PC in question...
... but absolutely fine for server-side things, like, say, JReceiver
which will happily run in a console.
I had been thinking that the bit of HV you wanted to run was the web
server - I'd forgotten that the supplied HomeVision software also
needs to present a GUI, since I don't use it except when programming
HV. I'm not sure what will happen to the GUI bit - whether it will
supress the GUI, or simply bomb out on not being able to instantiate
any of the screen objects...
Sorry if I've lead you up the wrong path.
Regards,
Mark
