What IP phone is about?
Cisco has some SIP phones too (7940 / 7960 or ATA-186/188), so you are not
more stuck with proprietary protocols.

It is a good choice to have VoIP phones in each room (hardware/ software or
combined: see Actiontec's USB Internet Phone Wizard)...
Then open a FWD account for each one and you can call each other for free
and even your overseas friends. (see http://fwd.pulver.com for details)
You can use a PC2Phone provider ( many available on the net) and then call
regular phones too.

Mainly two protocols are used now for residential users: SIP and H.323, so
the majority of the available hardware IP phones use one or both of those
protocols.
FWD uses SIP

I have something like this for each family member and it is great...
