IIRC it was (upside-down) terracotta flowerpots as they could withstand the
heat. Someone on the selfbuild list was also an advocate of running a bead
of silicone around the rim of the flowerpot to "glue" it to the
ceiling.
I can't remember whether the insulation could run over the top of the
flowerpot or it should be cut back. If it were me, I'd probably cut back
around the flowerpot, but then run the upper layers over the top (I've got
a 12" depth in my loft). You may come to a different conclusion :-)
It may be in the new FAQ - version 5 was released in the last couple of
months.

I read either on this list or the selfbuild list that using some plastic
pipe in the space above the halogens was a good way to keep halogens
away from insulation.
Do you cut a hole in the insulation or just lay it across the top of the
pipe?
