I flush fitted a couple of 21" Fujitsu Plasmas a couple of years ago
but there was a void behind the wall so it was effectively in free
space.

Provided you can get air to the rear of it and get the heat away
there is no need for a gap around the edge.

That is how I assume the guy on Grand Designs did it, likewise with
his flush mounted Hifi.
