Thanks! I'll save that link. I've just spent a few minutes on the phone
with him and we got as far as (and I quote):

It's a Motorola SB4200 Surfboard Cable Modem

There is a "spare" socket on the back which says "LINK ACT
100" and
looks like a phone type socket - same sort of width, but more square
("fat phone
socket!")

Ethernet it is then :-) I quite like is fat phone description :-) I
don't think I could do IT support, might result in deaths!
