RE: DDAR

Sorry Brian - just read your more recent message :-)

At least you have proof of two things:

1: Consistent results.
2: Proof that the DHCP server in the router makes a difference.

For our next piece of debugging, can you give me the IP addresses, and Subnet masks of all three items, the Music Server, and the DDARs. Sorry if this is teaching granny to suck eggs, but on the PC it's "IPCONFIG /all" in a CMD prompt, and on the DDARs, it's waiting till the "couldn't find music server", then scrolling all the way down to the bottom.

My GUESS is that the subnet mask on your music server is set wrongly, somehow...

Regards,

Mark

Brian,

Different lease expiry periods depending on which server allocated to them originally?
Multiple hubs/switches, with DDAR1 and Server connected to 1, and DDAR2 and Router connected to 2?

Hard to say, really.... but certainly some vaguely plausible explanations.

I'd suggest that you turn off your router, then hard reboot the DDARs (both of them), and see what happens.

It's only the DDAR _boot_ sequence that will require you to turn off the router - once a DDAR's found its server, it talks to it directly, not by broadcast.

Regards,

Mark

Hi Patrick and Mark,

I agree with what you both say, but why is it always this DDAR and never the other one?

Do not know where they are getting their IP's from, suspect the router...

Brian,

The "AutoConfigure" is just a cut-down DHCP server.

To issue a fixed address, you need to find and run a "real" DHCP server from somewhere, and use its tools to allocated fixed IP addresses.

The fact you're getting an IP address outside the AutoConfigure range suggests that there is a DHCP server somewhere else on your network (internet router? firewall? server?). If you disable/disconnect THAT box, then hard-boot your DDAR, it should ONLY find the DHCP server built into the Rio software.

To hard boot a DDAR, you need to unplug the mains, and leave out for at least 10 seconds.

Regards,

Mark

The DHCP client service is running on the server but the DHCP Server service is not.

In the DHCP is not set up to run on the server anyway.

My router had, the last time I managed to connect to it!, DHCP disabled.

I have the Allow Autoconfiguration ticked in the DDAR Manager program, and have set a range of 192.168.1.1 to 192.168.1.126, BUT the working DDAR unit has an address of 192.168.1.130!

I'm sure I read somewhere you could issue a fixed IP to these machines?

Ah - has thought....

Are you running a separate DHCP server on the network?

Yes they have been moved and yes they are both Dell jobbies, I now have it unplugged from the mains and the network, will try again in the morning, and all because the power went off!

Thanks,

B.

I assume that you've done the obvious thing and swapped them over physically?

This would rule out whether it's a problem with that cable/network port/whatever.

Are they both Dell-badged?

Cheers,

Brian,

Which network are you using? Ethernet or HPNA?

Which server software are you using? The supplied stuff (if so, which version), or JReceiver (again, if so, which version?)

Regards,

Mark

Does anyone know a trick to force these to connect?

I have 1 unit that works first time every time and 1 that takes days!

The duff one I usually unplug the CAT5 cable and remove the power cable, leave it for about a day then re connect the power and the network cable and jobs a goodun but this time it is saying cannot find the server, again.

Any ideas?

B.
