The magazine is (imho) much the same as the web site, eye-candy for the
technically curious rather than substance for the real enthusiast.
Several of us tried the mag when it first came out, none of the people I
spoke to really rated it. The last couple of times I looked at it it
seemed to have a lot of 'features' (or adverts really) that were based
on specific installs by specific companies and some examples of newish
kit like internet fridges or nice TVs.

To be honest though, this is the sort of standard of most (not all
before I get flamed) 'technical' magazines in this country. They are all
trying to sell as many copies as possible so stick to the 'techno-porn'
rather than getting into real serious technology discussion.

I would love to see a magazine that talked about retro-wiring a house
for x10 or IR distribution. Or one that discussed the relative merits of
hard wired home LAN compared to wireless and so on, but it wouldn't sell
in this country at the moment.

Infact, such a technical magazine would probably never sell here (for
once the slow uptake and high prices of HA kit are not to blame) as we
are simply not a nation of tinkerers any more. When was the last time a
popular car magazine talked about stripping down an engine or the last
time a popular 'diy' magazine actually talked about some major
construction rather than mdf and silver leaf.

But I dare say I am preaching to the converted here, we probably all
love scrapheap challenge and robot wars but deride changing rooms. We
are in the minority! Therefore we will not get the magazines or
programmes we want, that is simple economics.
