Distance to the 10/15 mile range is apparently possible, but line of
sight is essential. I've only done it a few hundred meters myself as
that's all I need.

Easy (I think). You put your AP in "Access Point" mode, connect it to
an omni directional antenna on your chimney, and any of your
neighbours with an antenna on their chimneys can talk to your AP via
"Access Point Client" mode (they ONLY talk to your AP).

You then need another AP that bridges to the remote/long distance
node. Hence probably a second aerial, this time directional, aimed at
the remote ADSL connection.

You can limit the APs to only allow traffic from particular MAC
addresses, although this is usually PCCards.

The bridging APs are configured to only talk to each others MAC
addresses.

This is probably one for the UKHA_Networking group as we've chatted
about this type of thing in various conversations over there.
