Richard,
What's
the angle in normal, recessed halogen light?
I
would like to know how many white LEDs I need to get equivalent of 50W
halogen
light.
We
need to find lumen details somewhere, probably on the packaging
box.
Cheers,
Nik
Candelas are lumens per steradian, so to convert
between lumens and candela you need to know the angle the beam of light
spreads over in steradians. The equation is:
lumens = candela *
angle_in_steradian
Apparantly to approximately convert degrees to steradian, multiply
the
square of the angle by 0.00024
So,
for a 9000mcd 18 degree LED, I calculate 0.7 lumens
I'd
be interested to know how many lumens your lamps are rated at, and what
beam
angle they have, just to see if theory vaguely intersects with reality
:o)
Cheers,
Rich.
Thanks Tim,
Fitting 18 Leds in a halogen fitting will not be easy. And it's
still
just 20W equivalent.
But I will not ditch idea yet. I think that they are constantly
developing stronger and stronger leds.
Do
you have an idea how Candelas transform into lumens?
I
have som light bulbs at home which are rated in lumens. What's mesured in
Lumens and what in Candelas?
Cheers,
Nik
Hi Nik,
I read on one of the (many) LED sites that 18 LEDs are equivalent
to a 20W halogen. It was all very vague since it didn't state the type of
LEDs, their mcd rating, viewing angle etc, all of which will make a
difference in how the light is "delivered" from the
fitting.
I'll let you know if we come up with anything worth "publishing"
;-)
Cheers,
Tim H.

Please, let me know if any of your ideas materialize. I would
like to buy a white LED array (10 leds) and put it in LV halogen
fitting, but I am not sure if they can generate enough
light.
If you make anything like that let me know if it can be compared
to normal halogen bulb.
Cheers,
Nik
A mate & I have been talking about this
for a little while. One idea we liked was taking the surround from a
mains or LV halogen fitting (the bit that fits into the ceiling) and
replacing the normal bulb with a circular piece of plexiglass, drilled
with a number of holes to suit the OD of the LEDs. There's a
number of other options / variations, such as fitting frosted
(plexi)glass in front of the LED array, making your own reflectors,
cannibalising an old halogen bulb assy. and substituting the bulb-part
with LEDs.
Alternatively, we've considered simply
replacing the capsule bulb in the regular under-cabinet light fittings
since this includes a reflector.
As for other online ideas try googling
(google.com) with LED lighting / lamps / lights etc. - that
should keep you busy for a while ;-)
Cheers,
Tim H.
I
found this url while browsing for 5
mins,

the
'moonglow' and 'comet' are the type of thing I'm after (except at
$30 cost too much!)

As some of you, like myself
have gone and put our names down for the bulk-buy
LED's...
I'm a little unsure of mounting
these, the purpose of me using these is to go on the edge of the
stairs, to illuminate every other step. The idea of having some
standard bezels is very un-attractive.
What I'm after is some idea's /
url's / images / thoughts of what could be a suitable, and of
course, aesthetically pleasing devices ! I know some of you have
bought these for use in the garden, so any idea's on those would be
great too (I've ordered 30 in total .. so they need using
!)
Ta,
Jonathan. +
