I have used various water conditioners that work on the magnetic
principle (electromagnet and fixed magnet variants), and know others
who have tried them as well. IME they are a complete waste of money -
I have never known them to make any difference at all.

If you're not used to soft water the salt-based softeners give the
water a bit of a slippery feel, but once you're used to it you won't
want to go back. You also have to remember to use less than half the
normal amount of soap/detergent or things get far too soapy &
slippery.
