Thanks Graham, I am getting closer to the solution.
My TV is new (less than an year old) 32" Sony, so should support all that.
I suspect that it's not set up properly. I'll check.
But one strange thing I noticed is that the same happens with DVDs "The Blue Planet" made by BBC. I asume their original format is PAL. However region setting is Region 0 (I think). That one is also in black and white over S-video.
Any explanation for that?
Nik

To be fair Nik, the multi-region functionality works on all video
formats, i.e. the region is either surpressed (effectively setting
the player to region zero) or mimicked (the player adopts the region
of the disk) depending on the actual mod.

What you are seeing is your TV's inability to cope with a US video
format, you would see exactly the same if you had an NTSC video tape
(unless the VCR in question did the conversion).

However, as Phil said, almost all recent TVs will handle a raw NTSC
signal correctly, so if your TV is new then it may well just not be
set up properly and if your TV is old, then your only option (other
than staying with RGB of course ;-)) would be to buy a converter or
change the TV.
