NTSC4.48 is known as PAL60 - it is *NOT* a proper or approved variant on NTSC - the carriers for the colour portion of the signal are the same as PAL but the frame rate is US standard (60Hz). NTSC3.58 has the colour information at the US standard which non-NTSC capable TVs just cannot see - hence black and white images result.

Marcus,
Any idea how much such transcoder cost? And where it can be obtained from?
I had no clue that there are different versions of NTSC signal.
Why PAL TVs can see NTSC 4.48 and not 3.58?
Cheers,
Nik

I have my Sony CXD-850 (200 DVDs) MR enabled, and I found
recently that when I use Region 1 or Region 0 DVDs they are
displayed as black and white over S-video.
I am using RGB connection at the moment and that works fine,
but in some scenarios you might want to have it in node 0 and
use KAT5 to connect it to TV, so better check first that it
works O.K.

I also have a similar "problem" with my Wharfedale 750 DVD player.
The reason it does it is because the player outputs a true NTSC (3.58)
signal for NTSC discs. The TV can't "see" this colour (because its
looking for PAL although it will synch to 60Hz so I get a stable picture)
and so just displays the Black and White (or Luminance) part of the signal.
When playing RGB through scart the signal is obviously encoded as RGB (i.e.
neither PAL or NTSC) and so the colour is fine. You could use a transcoder
to convert the colour signal to NTSC 4.48 so that PAL TV's can see it
(i.e. NTSC 4.48) which is exactly what "NTSC Playback on PAL TV) VCR's do,
alternatively replace the TV with one that can see a true NTSC signal.
